08 October 2009 - A day of small and great things

Who has despised the day of small things? Is the question the Lord asks in Zechariah 4 verse 10.

Today as a family we celebrate the day of many first small things. Things that most people would find trivial and insignificant in their day to day experience, but in the context of Sandra's story and recovery are great and wonderful things.

Today for instance was the very first time Sandra remained totally conscious and awake for in excess of 3 hours.

Today for the first time she was sat up out of bed in a wheelchair beside her bed.

Today for the first time she laughed and interacted with the nurses and medical staff over an extended period of time nodding and acknowledging her understanding of what was being said to her.

Today for the first time we put some cream into her hands and she was able to rub the cream into both her hands and into her face by herself.

Today for the very first time she beckoned our daughter Andrea to come over to her and totally embraced her and would not let her go.

Most significantly for Sandra, today was the very first day since being taken ill that she was able to go outside of the intensive care ward and sit outside just to breath in the crisp fresh air, and to basque in the afternoon sun. In more ways than one, today has been one of the best days of our lives.

As we close today in thanksgiving there is a verse that echoes in my heart, where the Psalmist says "Oh that men would praise the LORD for his wonderful works towards the children of men."

Join with us as together we give thanks to God for a day of both small and great things.

07 October 2009 - Keep asking!

'Ask and keep asking', is he essence of what Jesus tells us when he tells us to ask, seek and knock (Matthew 7:7) Our heavenly father reminds us that he takes delight in hearing the cry of his children but we must ask with persistence.

With each passing day we continue to see continuing improvement in Sandra's health, with today being one of her best her days yet for interactivity.

After a slightly restless night, she woke this morning in very good spirit, with some great interaction with two of her close friends who spent some time with her this morning, clearly pleased to see them there were lots of smiles and expressions of bemusement as they bought her up to date with all we have been up to as a family. (I might be in a little trouble when she recovers!)

This evening she continues to be in very good humour when one of our close friends came to see her, her face was an absolute picture of radiance.

As said yesterday there are some precautions with her growing strength, she gave the medics a fright earlier today when she pulled the tracheotomy clear out of her throat much to the shock of every one else, this was re-installed without any adverse effect.

Clearly God is continuing to show grace and favour towards Sandra and us as a family, and as he has encouraged us to keep on asking, like the famous words of Oliver Twist we say "Please sir can we have some more?"

06 October 2009 - Transitioning

After three weeks of continuing progress, Sandra is now clearly in a state of transitioning from being constantly being laid out in bed to spending more time upright and even attempting to get out of bed as her strength continues to grow.

That growing strength also brings with it some precautionary hazards like today where she totally pulled her feed tube which is inserted through her nasal passage through to her stomach all the way out, this necessitated her having the tube reinserted and an X-ray to ensure it was repositioned correctly. Along side this she has made several attempts to climb out of bed to stand on her own feet (The Doctor said that these were all good signs of growing strength) although much of the rest of her time is spent asleep.

Over the next week or so the focus will be to continue to reduce the size of the tracheotomy fitting and to get her on a lower dependency ward with a view to looking at the process of rehabilitation.

There will be a number of hurdles to clear in order to achieve this but please continue the declarations and prayers for her at this time.

While you are praying please also pray for the Barrett family who lost their father this evening after a very sudden turn in health. Please pray that God will comfort them at this their time of grief.
